Too right mate...I think alot new players are somewhat too dependent on tabs, On parts songs you don't know tabs are great..However it was very disapointing knowing #'s instead of notes. I took lessons for near 20 years ( off and on ) but I never put forth enough toward it. You show for a lessons, Teacher says go to C# and you'll be asking "What number is that ?" So I know it's frustrating...I'm 40 now. I can play about 20 covers. Cool for partys but nothing else. I started using octaves to learn 2 strings at once.E and D, A and G...Now I know where everything is without help finding a note that goes with the scale I'm in...So take it from me, Learn your notes and scales before asking your teacher to just show you a cover unless it could be used as an example of an excersise you are learning. I could have learned so much more. So if you want to be a Bass Player...Learn those notes, Atleast then when your teacher says Go to your 9th fret on your E string...Ya mean C# teacher? Some might disagree but everybody does somethings differently. Good Luck and don't Quit cause If you do like I did off and on, You'll never know just how good you could have been.
If only more people realised that the biggest shortcut to getting better quickly is to find a good teacher, and then practice what they teach.

Good post. Excellent attitude.

Dude, your tabs are tight. Could you do (My Favorite) Nightmare? Your other Metal Church tabs seem pretty accurate. I've figured out a good bit of this song, but I'd like to see your take on it.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I am a 36 yr old who always wanted to know how to play the bass guitar, but just recently bought myself one. I played cello in jr. high & high school so I kinda of thought that I would be able to pick the bass up quickly. I WAS SOOOO WRONG!!!! I have been trying to learn on my own, with the aid of an instructional video, but I have soo many questions that the guy on the vid just won't give me the answers to!!! Thanks to your comments I finally broke down and found me an instructor. I have had only one session with him and I learned more in that hour than I was able to get on my own in the last 2 months!! Again, thanks for the info!

"It is incredibly important for any serious musician to be taking music lessons from an experienced teacher."

I agree that getting the right tuition can really help you to lean bass guitar so much quicker. Having an experienced teacher can help get you to where you want to go musically.

Thanks for the advice. I've been playing bass for about 8 months and it took leasons for about 6 of them and i feel like i know alot more than if i didnt take them. My Teacher was a awsome teacher who helped me whenever i got confused or anything like that. Im 14 and was wondering if i should still be taking leasons and you answered my question.

i have to agree 100% with your outlook on this subject, i play electric and acoustic guitar and looking back i have to say i regret never taking formal lessons, i am self taught and i know a decent amount bout what i do but i'm no jimi hendrix, and it can shatter a little bit of your self-esteem when you get showed up when your in that sit. if anyone out there is seriously thinkin bout becoming a musician take what this man says to heart.
